By definition, security is the protection of a country and its people from anything that might have an impact on their well-being such as, crime waste dumping and the poaching of natural assets, just to name a few. Areas considered important to maintaining a country’s security are its politics, social environment, economic well-being, military capabilities and environment issues. A threat to any of these areas is a risk to the county’s security.

CSIR provides specialised technology support to assist in anti-poaching efforts

In 2013, the CSIR entered into an agreement with SANParks to render specialist technology support over five years in several tactical and strategic programmes.

High-tech control centre established as force multiplier for counter rhino poaching

“2015 is the year in which the war on rhino poaching will be won or lost.” This is according to Major General (retired) Johan Jooste, Commanding Officer for Special Projects for the South African National Parks (SANParks). The CSIR has taken up the challenge to ensure that the best possible scientific and technological tools contribute to the protection of these natural resources. The latest intervention is the establishment of a mission-area control centre near Skukuza in the Kruger National Park.

CSIR converts 4×4 trailer into a ranger tactical trailer

The CSIR has converted a standard 4×4 trailer into a tactical unit, which will be used by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency in clandestine counter-poaching operations.
