Air Scenario Simulation

The CSIR develops robust simulation environments at various system levels. Mission level simulations for combat scenarios modelling aircraft capabilities in the relevant operational and threat environment are developed. These modelling capabilities include air-to-air and air-to-ground mission simulations, multiple air and ground threat scenario simulations, parametric modelling of fixed and rotary wing flight models, as well as the modelling of various aircraft stores.

The South African Air Force (SAAF) utilises this capability to achieve an improved understanding of the mission environment necessary to develop and evaluate tactics against new threat scenarios. This capability has made a significant contribution to the development and evaluation of doctrine and tactics for fourth generation fighter aircraft.

The SAAF used the CSIR developed mission planning tool, based on the mission simulation system, to develop its doctrine and tactics as well as perform mission planning for the Gripen in preparation for the Soccer World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
