Kevin Jamison

Mr Kevin Jamison is a principal aeronautical engineer at the CSIR Aeronautics group.

Research expertise and interests:

Jamison is an expert on Systems engineering, aircraft stores integration, modelling, simulation, munitions conceptualisation and development, aircraft store separation analyses, air combat modelling and simulation.

Career background

Jamison worked as an aeronautical engineer from 1993 to 1999 at CSIR Aerotek group, his focus was on research and industrial work in the areas of aeroelasticity (flutter and buffeting), store separation analyses and structural dynamics, including vibration modal testing and analysis. He then became a senior engineer from 1999 to 2003 at the CSIR Epsilon engineering services group, his focus was Systems modelling and simulation of the anti-tank missile system and rocket system for the Rooivalk attack helicopter.

Analysis and flight test support for stores integration with combat aircraft (test design using modern design of experiments (MDOE), modelling, simulation, system identification, ballistics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analyses (FEA)  and flutter evaluation).

Jamison joined Denel Optronics in 2003 till 2006 as a system engineer; his focus was on Qualification engineer of a stabilised optical system turret for military helicopters. Designed a vibration isolation system for stabilised optical turrets.

Chief systems engineer of a helmet display system for jet combat aircraft in collaboration with a major international OEM.

In 2006 to 2010 he was a systems engineer at Pebble Bed Modular Reactor, his focus was on Developed and validated a unique safety critical instrumentation system that rapidly discriminates between fuel and moderator spheres and measures the burn-up of the irradiated fuel spheres within a short time after being removed from the reactor core.  The performance of instrumentation system was then doubled for a proposed next-generation pebble bed reactor concept.

Jamison is currently a Principal aeronautical engineer at the CSIR, His focus is on Systems engineer developing the innovative Inundu electronic test and evaluation pod that will provide a “laboratory in the sky” to enable the testing of new radar and electronic warfare systems without having for first ruggedize the electronics for flight.

Cleared the Umbani precision guided munition for release from the BAE Hawk for the SAAF and an international client using a combination of wind-tunnel grid testing and computational aerodynamic tools.  Managing the ongoing development of stores separation analysis tools to maintain a world-class capability.

Developing models of air-to-air and air-to-ground combat scenarios to help the SAAF develop tactics and specifications for weapon systems.  Developed the HPAAM model to help train pilots in the application of the A-Darter missile.
